Police detained a man who fatally stabbed an FDNY EMT Lieutenant and barricaded himself inside an apartment in Astoria, Queens Thursday afternoon, officials said. 

At 2:10 p.m., EMS Lt. Allison Russo was crossing the street near 20th Avenue and 41st Street in an attempt to get food when she was stabbed throughout her body by a 34-year-old man wielding a knife. 

Russo, a 25-year veteran of the FDNY EMS and a first responder to the World Trade Center attack, was severely injured and taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced deceased. 

The suspect was chased back to his apartment at 19-80 41st Street where he barricaded himself inside. 

Police responded to the scene and called in negotiators to attempt to remove the man without further incident. 

Eventually, the suspect left the building and was taken by officers to the 114th precinct where he awaits charges.  

Detectives are investigating.

Firefighters and police are on the scene with a person who assaulted a medic and barricaded him or herself inside a building with another person.

The address reported for this incident has changed to 19-80 41st St.

Firefighters stated that a person stabbed a medic, who is receiving medical care. They added that the suspect took a woman inside the barricaded building.

Police are working to determine whether the person who sustained a stab wound is a firefighter or a medic. They added that the person is in critical condition.

Contrary to an earlier report, police stated that a suspect is barricaded and is not at large.

According to multiple news reports, the victim succumbed to her injuries.

Firefighters stated that the suspect is in custody. There were no additional injuries, and EMS units have been released.
