Police have arrested and charged Frank James, the suspect in Tuesday’s subway shooting in Sunset Park, Brooklyn which left nearly two dozen people injured. 

A security camera worker named Zak Dahhan noticed James at a McDonald’s in the East Village and contacted Crime Stoppers. 

According to a Wednesday afternoon briefing from NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewel, officers canvassed the area and located James near the corner of St. Marks Pl and 1st Avenue, where they took him into custody without further incident.

James is being charged with conducting a violent attack on a mass transportation vehicle in violation of [18 U.S.C. §§ 1992(a)(7) and (b)(1).](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1992) 

Chief of Detectives James Essig reported the suspect had a series of prior crimes in several states. 

According to comments by New York Mayor Eric Adams in Wednesday morning media appearances, there was no evidence that James had an accomplice in the shooting.

The mayor also said that four people remained hospitalized after 16 victims were transported on Tuesday, including 10 who were struck by gunfire. None of the injuries were life-threatening. 

Adams also said that there would be an increased police presence on the subway Wednesday morning.

The MTA said it was resuming full service on all its lines after police concluded their investigation at 36 St Station.

Public schools have also resumed their normal schedules after students and faculty were forced to shelter-in-place at schools within a radius of the shooting scene.

Brooklyn Subway Shooting Suspect in Police Custody

Police have received an unconfirmed report of shots fired.

Incident reported at 36 St Station (D) (N) (R).

Police have received an additional unconfirmed report of an explosion heard at the train station.

Firefighters are also responding to an unconfirmed report of a smoke condition at the train station.

Police are on the scene and confirm that a person was shot in the leg. EMS is on the scene.

Additional police units have been requested to aid in the suspect's search. The suspect, a man, is carrying a school bag and is wearing orange construction clothes, according to officers.

There are a total of three victims who were shot, as per police.

Police are requesting additional two units to assist with the traffic control.

Police advise that they have found the fourth shot victim. One of the victims is unconscious, and one is being evaluated by EMS.

Officers advise that shooting victims have also been located at the 25th St station as well.

Police are requesting additional units in the area of  25th St & 4th Ave and 96th St & 4th Ave.

A fifth victim has been located, according to officers.

The suspect is said to be fleeing the scene aboard a train wearing a MTA uniform, gas mask, and carrying construction tools.

In addition to the shooting incident, officers have located multiple undetonated devices at the 36th St station.

An updated suspect description from officers describes the suspect as a 5'5" tall, 180 lbs, Black man wearing an MTA uniform, gas mask, and carrying construction tools.

Units on scene report that three of the shooting victims are in critical, but not life-threatening condition and two victims have minor injuries.

Officers advise that two more gunshot victims related to the incident have walked into a nearby police station.

Multiple streets are closed around the 36th St and 25th St stations while the investigation is ongoing.

Units are checking area hospitals for any additional victims of the shooting incident.

Officers have located another five patients at nearby hospitals suffering from injuries related to the incident. It is unclear how many of these people were actually shot.

An officer on scene reports that approximately ten people have been shot or injured during the shooting incident.

According to the official NYC Emergency Management Twitter account, officials advise calling 311 if unable to reach someone who may have been impacted by the incident. If outside NYC, call 212-639-9675.

In a press conference, NYPD officials said that 10 people were shot by a suspect aboard a Manhattan-bound N train shortly before 8:30 am. Five people are in critical but stable condition. Six others were also injured with various injuries, including shrapnel and smoke inhalation. The search for the suspect continues.

DOE Chancellor David C. Banks reported that the shelter-in-place order on schools except those in close proximity to the 36th Street station has been lifted.

Officers are investigating a U-Haul possibly related to the shooting in Gravesend.

Police have identified a person of interest named Frank James and offered up to $50K reward for information leading to his whereabouts.

Frank James is now considered a suspect and no longer only a person of interest, according to media comments by Mayor Adams. Four people remain hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police officers report the subway shooting suspect is in police custody.

According to police radio communications, officers detained the shooting suspect near Saint Marks Place and 1st Avenue.
