An off-duty NYPD officer was shot in the shoulder by two men during an attempted carjacking in Arverne Tuesday night, local news sources said.

The incident happened near the intersection of Beach 62nd Street and Beach Channel Drive at approximately 10:20 p.m.

Two suspects approached the officer’s vehicle at a red light and tried to carjack him, police said in a statement. When the officer tried to exit the vehicle, one of the suspects opened fire, striking the officer once. The officer returned fire but did not strike the suspects, police said.

Additional officers responded and spotted the suspects about three blocks away. A suspect opened fire at their unmarked vehicle, striking the bumper, police said.

Instead of returning fire, the officers chased the suspects on foot and arrested them.

A gun was recovered, which the NYPD shared on social media.

The NYPD mobilized its vehicles to block off roadways as they rushed the officer to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Both of the suspects, an 18-year-old and 19-year-old man, have been charged. The 19-year-old has been charged with two counts of Attempted Murder, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Robbery, and Assault. The 18-year-old has been charged with Robbery.

Tuesday night's shooting was the sixth of an NYPD officer so far in 2022.

"This would be outrageous any time, but we’re just hours away from laying one of our finest to rest," New York Mayor Eric Adams tweeted ahead of Wednesday's funeral for the second of two NYPD officers killed in Harlem earlier this month. 

"This is just unacceptable.  We must do the work to end this epidemic of gun violence and deliver real peace and safety to our streets."

Off-Duty Officer Shot in Attempted Robbery, Two Suspects Detained

Officers on the scene advise an off-duty officer has been shot in the back.

According to the police, two suspects have been placed in custody.

Police have requested all available units to the scene to assist in investigations after the report was confirmed.

Officers on the scene advise they have recovered a firearm that was possibly used in the shooting.

Police advise EMS is en route to attend to the injured officer.

New reports by the police advise the officer is being transported to a nearby city hospital.

Police are blocking off Beach Channel Drive.

Police are also shutting down the Van Wyck Expressway as they rush the officer to the hospital.

Police report they have arrived at the hospital.

Multiple citizen user videos show first responders on the scene.

According to an official press release video tweeted by NYPDnews, two men, one armed with a gun, approached an off-duty officer while he was in his vehicle with the intention of robbing him. When he exited his vehicle, one suspect fired a shot striking him in the shoulder. The off-duty officer returned fire but did not strike anyone. Shots fired by one of the suspects struck the passenger side of an occupied vehicle. The suspects then fled the scene on foot. Officers nearby heard gunfire and rushed to the scene, they proceeded to aid the injured off-duty officer and requested backup.

Additional units spotted the suspects near Beach Chanel Dr and Beach 59th St. When the officers attempted to stop the suspects, the armed suspect fired several shots toward the officers and struck the rear of a police vehicle. Those officers did not return fire but chased the suspects on foot and apprehended them and recovered the weapon. The off-duty officer is being treated at a city hospital and his injury is not considered life-threatening.
