A man was shot in the backseat of a vehicle in the South Bronx early Wednesday, police said.

At about 5:42 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call of shots fired in front of 390 East 162nd Street.

The officers found a 45-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head in the rear passenger seat of of a Nissan SUV.

EMS pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The driver and another passenger in the vehicle were not injured.

According to a [Daily News report](https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/ny-bronx-road-rage-fatal-shooting-20211222-hwfvzyg2rrcfbobpram2k4njui-story.html) citing officials, the suspect fired into the Nissan from another vehicle. 

The newspaper cited officials saying it was a road range incident.

There are no arrests as the investigation continues.




Man Fatally Shot in Backseat of SUV

Police have received an unconfirmed report of three shots fired.

Police have received an additional report that states a man is shot.

Police on the scene confirm a man is shot. They are working to extract him from a vehicle and conducting CPR.

Officers advise that they have located a shell casing in front of 920 Melrose Ave and have requested additional units for further assistance.

An additional report states that the shooting suspect fled southbound on Melrose road in a white SUV.

Officers have also requested a citywide hospital canvass for another possible gunshot victim.

Officers on scene report the man shot is unresponsive. They are working to block off traffic on either lanes on the bridge.

Police advise that the suspects are a man and a woman.

Officers advise that the man is critically injured.

Officers advise that Melrose Ave has been shut down from 162nd St to 165th St.
