One person was killed and seven were injured in an apartment fire in the East Village Thursday morning, FDNY officials said. 

At 7:08 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a fire in an apartment at 118 Avenue D. 

Upon arrival, crews located flames and people trapped on the fourth floor of the 14-story building, according to [FDNY Assistant Chief Michael Ajello](https://www.instagram.com/p/CXjMn1_l1ve/). 

Citizen user videos showed firefighters battling smoke and fire shooting from the building's windows. 

The blaze was raised to a second alarm to request additional units and resources to the scene. 

In total, 180 firefighters responded. 

The fire was deemed under control at 8:18 a.m.

FDNY officials said eight people were injured by the fire. 

EMS personnel pronounced one of those people, an adult man, dead at the scene.

Of the surviving victims, Ajello said three people sustained life-threatening injuries and four people sustained minor injuries. 

NYPD officials said EMS personnel transported a 46-year-old woman, an 18-year-old woman, and a 13-year-old boy to area hospitals. The 46-year-old was listed in critical condition, while the 18-year-old and the boy were listed in stable condition.

While the cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation, FDNY officials stated multiple electric bicycles were located in the apartment where the fire broke out. Scroll down for fire safety tips for devices with lithium-ion batteries.

According to a tweet from the Fire Department of New York City, firefighters are working to extinguish a fire in an apartment building.

An additional update states that a person has sustained fire related injury.

Police at the scene advise multiple people have self-evacuated from the building and require medical attention.

Firefighters advise that the main body of the fire has been extinguished. Further search is going on.

All visible fire has been extinguished, primary search results were negative.

It has been advised that two people were fatally injured in the fire while two others have sustained serious but non life-threatening injuries.
