Two people were killed and several others including two children were hurt in a heavy fire in an apartment building in Harlem early Friday morning.

At about 1:40 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the five-story building on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard near West 111th Street.

Firefighters arrived to find fire on the third floor.

FDNY officials said the fire spread to upper floors of the building.

A heavy clutter condition fueled the fire and caused it to spread.

More than 100 firefighters were required to put out the blaze at about 3 a.m.

Firefighters rescued nine people from the building, but two victims did not survive. 

An 81-year-old man and a woman in her 30s, [reportedly](https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2021/11/19/2-dead-after-fire-at-harlem-apartment-building-4-year-old-girl-hospitalized/) a mother of two, were pronounced dead at local hospitals.

The woman's 4-year-old daughter and 1-month-old son were also transported to the hospital.

Another tenant was seriously injured, and five others, including a firefighter and the 1-month-old, had minor injuries.

The Red Cross was reportedly at the scene assisting the displaced families.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

On Friday morning, the fire department was sharing safety info at 300 W. 116th Street until 3 p.m.
