A suspect who exchanged gunfire with police following a domestic incident involving an off-duty police officer was taken into custody Tuesday morning in South Ozone Park, police said.

At 8:40 a.m., police responded to a 911 call that an off-duty officer was in need of assistance near 133rd Avenue and 129th Street. 

Upon arrival, patrol officers knocked on the front door of a residence and engaged a man in conversation. 

The man threatened to shoot them, and the officers backed away and requested the Emergency Service Unit (ESU) to the scene, NYPD officials said in a [press conference](https://twitter.com/NYPDnews/status/1437821005423169538?s=20). 

Officials said a woman, the off-duty officer, was still in the home when ESU arrived and attempted to continue speaking with the man. 

The man then fired multiple gunshots at police. Officials said the gun he used may have been the woman's service weapon. 

The woman was able to escape the building by jumping from a second-story window, and the man continued to fire shots at her and officers. 

Police returned fire, striking the suspect once in the arm and causing him to retreat back into the residence. 

Officials said the man's brother arrived to the scene and was able to help hostage negotiators convince him to cease fire and surrender peacefully. 

The suspect eventually came to the front door and was taken into custody. 

He and the off-duty officer, who may have broken a leg upon jumping from the window, were both transported to area hospitals for treatment. 

The extent of their injuries is currently unclear.  

An investigation is ongoing.

An officer has requested backup to the scene for a report of a dispute involving a firearm.

Police at the scene advise a person has barricaded themselves. The NYPD's Emergency Service Unit (ESU) is en route.

The NYPD's Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) and Technical Assistance Response Unit (TARU) have also been requested.

NYPD units have confirmed the barricaded person has a firearm.

Police have requested a BearCat, an armored police vehicle, to the scene.

The NYPD has called for additional units and resources to the scene.
