Half of New York City’s subway lines lost service Sunday night following an “unprecedented” power surge and system breakdown, the governor said.

At about 8:25 p.m., Con Edison reported “losing a feeder,” or high-voltage cable, for a short period time, causing a voltage drop, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a [briefing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCM6xiZc5zs) Monday morning.

At about the same time, Hochul said, two power plants and generators went offline, causing a momentary outage which triggered a backup system.

When the system switched back to normal functioning at about 9:10 p.m., there was an “unprecedented surge” that knocked out the subway system’s signaling and communications abilities, the governor said.

All of the subway’s numbered lines, as well as the L train, lost service, impacting about 83 trains.

Five trains stopped between stations and all of them were evacuated. 

Passengers evacuated themselves from three of the trains and walked through the tunnels, causing major safety concerns, Hochul said.  

At about 1:30 a.m., power to the trains was restored after the FDNY made sure no one was on the tracks.

There were no reports of anyone injured.

Hochul said officials have not seen evidence that a maintenance hole fire in Long Island City near a power plant triggered the outage, but it’s being investigated.

Power Surge Caused Massive MTA Service Disruption, Evacuations

Incident reported at E 149th St & Grand Concourse St.

Police have received an unconfirmed report of shots fired on a train.

Firefighters have received an unconfirmed report of a stalled train in a tunnel that may be related to this incident.

The report states the train is on the 2 line.

Firefighters are responding to the incident.

Firefighters have confirmed one train is stalled on the track and have requested power shut off on the 2 and 5 lines from 149 St - Grand Concourse forward heading uptown.

Power has been shut down on track two and track three.

Fire crews have reported from the track as people are self-extricating from the train.

According to the official Twitter alert account of the New York City Fire Department, all hands have been called in response to the stalled train.

All firefighters at the scene are evacuating the 2 and 5 train.

According to the official Twitter account regarding NYC's official emergency notification system, due to a power outage, massive disruptions have been reported on the 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, and L train lines.

Police at the scene have advised approximately 200 people are being evacuated off the trains.

Firefighters have been advised another train is stalled at E 138th St and Grand Concourse St on the 4 line.

Fire crews have advised power has been cut on the 4 line between the two stations.

Firefighters have reported power has been shut off on the 4 line between 149 St - Grand Concourse and Jackson and that power has been removed from all tracks between E 149th St and E 138th St.

Fire crews have confirmed three trains stalled in the station including a 5 train on a southbound track, a 5 train on a northbound track, and a 2 train on a northbound track.

According to the official MTA Twitter account providing NYC with 24/7 subway service alerts and live customer support, personnel are working to restore service on all lines after a power surge.

Fire crews have advised a few people will remain on the train due to mobility concerns and the operation has been in effect for approximately 75 minutes.

Video shared by Citizen user ernstc93 shows a number of vehicles stopped at a light near the scene with flashing lights reflecting on them all.

Police have advised evacuation efforts are still underway.

Two trains have been reported completely evacuated.

Fire crews have advised that all tracks in all directions have been stripped of power at 149 St - Grand Concourse station.

Firefighters report that they are concluding evacuation operations.
