An off-duty police officer fired a gunshot after he was assaulted Wednesday night in Flatbush, NYPD officials said.

At 9:40 p.m., an off-duty officer was near Martense Street and Rogers Avenue when he was assaulted by what [local news reports](https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/off-duty-nypd-officer-fires-gun-during-fight-with-group-of-men-in-brooklyn-after-argument/3134346/) said was as many as 10 men. 

The officer then fired one gunshot, according to a statement from NYPD officials. 

It's unclear if the shot was aimed at the men or if it was fired away from them as a warning shot. No one is believed to have been struck by the bullet.

The men fled southbound on Nostrand Avenue.

The officer sustained a minor laceration to the hand and was treated at an area hospital.

An investigation is ongoing.
