A driver struck and killed a 37-year-old man on a motor scooter before crashing into the outdoor dining of a restaurant in the Ditmars section of Astoria Thursday night. Two others, including the driver, were injured.

The crash happened shortly before 8 p.m. at the intersection of Ditmars Boulevard and 35th Street.

According to preliminary information released by police, the driver of a Mercedes-Benz drove into the bike lane while attempting to pass another vehicle while traveling northbound on 35th Street.

The Mercedes, driving at a “high rate of speed,” struck a Yamaha moped, hit two other parked cars, and finally slammed into an outdoor dining structure at the restaurant Rosatoro.

The moped driver was found unconscious and unresponsive. A 32-year-old woman who was dining at the restaurant was struck by debris and suffered injuries to her legs. The 60-year-old woman driving the Mercedes was also injured.

All three were transported to local hospitals. The moped driver was pronounced dead, the 32-year-old woman is in stable condition, and the Mercedes driver’s condition could not be confirmed.

Dozens of videos captured by Citizen users showed the aftermath of the deadly crash. The wrecked out-of-control vehicle could be seen wedged fully inside the collapsed dining structure.

Police have made no arrests as investigators try to determine what led to the crash.
