Two police officers were struck by gunfire while responding to a 911 call in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn, Sunday night.

Police said during a briefing on Monday that three officers responded at about 9:15 p.m. to a report of a man shot at an apartment at 42 Hawthorne Street.

As the officers approached the second-floor apartment up a narrow stairwell, the suspect emerged from the unit cloaked in a blanket. After a brief exchange of words, the man displayed a gun.

Police said the officers commanded the man to drop the weapon, but he refused, and both parties started shooting at each other.

The suspect fired three times, and the officers shot 23 times, police said.

Two officers were grazed by bullets—one on the bulletproof vest and the other on the leg. The suspect was not struck.

Police said the suspect retreated back into the apartment and barricaded himself inside, and the incident developed into a hostage negotiation.

Officers with the NYPD Emergency Service Unit were able to eventually remove the man from the apartment. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and placed under arrest.

Police said officers also located a man inside the apartment described as the suspect’s roommate who has been been shot once in each leg. He was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

The two officers who were struck were also taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Police said they recovered three guns at the apartment: a .38 caliber revolver, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, and a shotgun.

Charges against the suspect have not been announced.
