A child was fatally struck by a vehicle in Williamsburg Wednesday morning, officials said. 

Police were alerted by an MTA worker to the corner of S. 5th Street and Hooper Street just after 8:30 a.m. following a report of a person struck by a vehicle. 

Officers arrived and discovered a 6-year-old boy who was unconscious and had been severely injured.

Medics responded to the scene and pronounced the boy deceased. 

According to a report from the NYPD, the boy was struck by a school bus as he walked into the road. 

The operator of the bus left after the child was struck but was later detained by police for questioning near Bedford Ave and Hewes Street.

Detectives are involved in an ongoing investigation.
