An 18-year-old man was arrested and charged after a high-altitude escapade on the Queensboro Bridge, police say.

At around 5 p.m. Thursday evening, police responded to a report of a man on the bridge. 

Officials say that the suspect climbed a construction ladder from the bike path on the lower level, reaching the roadway of the bridge. 

He then climbed a tower to the upper level of the bridge and remained suspended over the roadway until he was guided down by responding officers. 

Traffic was snarled for hours as a result of the stunt. 

The teen was charged with reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of noxious matter and criminal trespass.

Police and medics are responding to a report of a person climbing the Roosevelt Island tramway.

Police advise they are canvassing the 59th Street Bridge.

The address reported for this incident has changed to Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge.

Police advise they do not seen anyone on the bridge. They are requesting an aviation unit to do a fly-over to assist in their search.

Police have located the man. They advise he is climbing the stanchion of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, and he is armed with pepperspray.

Police advise he is currently on the upper level of the Manhattan-bound side of the Queensboro Bridge.

Police advise they are closing down the upper level of the Queensboro Bridge to traffic.

Police advise they are speaking with the climber.

Police advise they have detained the climber. No injuries are reported.

Contrary to an earlier report, police have not yet detained the climber. They are negotiating with him and advise he has put down the pepperspray.

According to an update from the NYPD, the teen is in custody.
