A man was shot by officers after stabbing an NYPD officer on an anti-looting assignment in the neck, officials say. 

According to a statement by commissioner Dermot Shea, officers positioned on Church Avenue and Flatbush Avenue to prevent looting just before midnight on Wednesday were attacked when video surveillance shows the suspect “walk up to the officers casually, take out a knife and stab one of the officers in the neck.” 

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital where he was listed in stable condition. 

Police officials say that other officers nearby heard shots fired from the location and rushed to the scene. Those officers reported that the suspect had a gun, believed to be an officer’s service weapon. 

Gunfire was exchanged and the suspect was struck multiple times. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Two officers were shot in the hand.


Three Officers and One Suspect Wounded in Shootout

Police are rushing units and ambulances to the scene after shots were fired at officers.

Police have confirmed one officer has been shot.

A rescue ambulance is rushing the wounded officer to a nearby hospital.

Police have updated their report to state that two officers have been shot and rushed to an area hospital.

Officers are shutting down all traffic in the intersection.

An additional update from the NYPD stated that one officer was stabbed, another was shot, and one suspect was shot during the confrontation.

The suspect who was shot is in critical condition and being transported to a hospital.

Both police officers are reported to be in stable condition.

Police have an additional suspect in custody.

According to an update from an NYPD spokesman, two officers were shot during the confrontation. Their injuries are not considered to be life threatening. (A previous update stated that one officer was shot and another officer was stabbed.)

During an official press conference held by the NYPD, a spokesperson stated that in total three officers were injured during the confrontation with a violent suspect. After an officer was stabbed in the neck, the suspect engaged in a shootout with two nearby officers in which all three parties were struck by gunfire. A total of 22 shell casings were located at the scene of the crime. The suspect is in critical condition, while all three officers are considered in stable condition.
