At 9:26 p.m., police responding to a ShotSpotter alert near 1668 Bergen Street found a male victim who had already been injured in a shooting at the corner of Bergen Street and Rochester Avenue. Police confronted an armed 34-year-old man nearby who witnesses said was the shooter. After a standoff lasting about a minute, police shot and killed the alleged shooter.

In a preliminary press conference near the scene, Chief of Department Terence Monahan said police found the shooter hiding behind a tree in front of 1680 Bergen Street. For about a minute, police and nearby residents urged the suspect to drop the gun. Video uploaded to social media appears to confirm this timeline. Chief Monahan said 10 officers eventually fired shots. The armed man was declared deceased. Police recovered the handgun he was holding. The original shooting victim was hospitalized in stable condition. Some police officers were treated for tinnitus. Chief Monahan said body camera footage is being reviewed and more information will be made available. It is not yet clear what caused the initial shooting prior to the arrival of police. 

Chief Monahan said this incident is not related to ongoing protests.
