Man Shot After Dispute, Four Detained

THURSDAY, 10:49 AM: Police responded to a report of a man with a gun on the 400 block of W 163rd St. Upon their arrival, officers found a man who had been struck in the head by gunfire. Backup was promptly requested, and a search for the suspects ensued. Soon thereafter, officers were able to make their way into a nearby apartment and detain multiple individuals. Officers proceeded to block traffic on Amsterdam Ave from 183rd St down to 155th St, effectively locking down the Washington Heights neighborhood as they investigated further. However, a helicopter search in the area yielded no outstanding suspects, and the response was eventually de-escalated. In a recent press conference given by the NYPD, police said that the incident began when a dispute broke out in a building. A group of people spilled out into the street and threw rocks at an apartment window, which prompted someone to fire a gunshot from the building, hitting the victim. He was struck in the face by what police believe were small rounds from a shotgun. A gunshot also may have been fired back at the apartment in retaliation. Four people in total were detained, and the investigation is ongoing. The victim's status is unclear at this time.
